I know that technology helps us day to day, but they can sometimes get in the way of the very basic things. We communicate much more via email than telephone and sometimes the tone and intentions are lost in an email. We must be extra careful to convey the right meaning when communicating electronically.
· An introduction is sometimes omitted from an email. Just sending your resume via email without as much as a hello should not happen.
· One-word answers are efficient but a little rude.
· Please and thank you go a long way. People actually do notice these things.
· Spelling and grammar is checked and double-checked. I know many people who discard a resume based on multiple errors on a letter or resume.
Pay attention to these little things or people may get the impression that you are impolite, short on patience or don’t pay attention to details. These traits; in addition to skills, can make the difference between one candidate and another.
I get feedback that includes comments about soft-skills much more today than ever before. People want to hire people with whom they can connect. If you’re in sales, they want to know that you will connect with their clients, not just sell.
Reputations take a long time to make and sometimes a very short time to break and with social media, can spread like wild fire.
